About John Nash

biography

bio

"Love moves away.

The light changes.

I need more grace than I thought.

Rumi

I’m frequently asked what kind of music I play, or what are my songs like? These are awkward conversations. It’s like trying to describe a color. “Bluesy folk” or “urban jazzy indie” no adjectives really get you there. I may as well say something like “where red meets orange”, or “a cross between Paul Simon and Christopher Walken." or "the love child of Leonard Cohen and Mark Knopfler." I can say something about what my songs are about, though. In a word, they’re about Grace. An exploration of force and flow and patience.

It seems to me the deep truths are bound in paradox, and when you inquire enough, you arrive at a place where all you can do is behold two opposing truths. And this seems connected to those moments when I realize that what I thought I knew about something, or someone, was wrong. It feels right to trust my judgments less and less - I’ve been so wrong about so much, and the slightest change in lighting changes the appearance of things. Hafiz wrote a poem about blind men trying to describe an elephant. On to the limits of epistemology - cultivating some measure of humility in the face of how much I don’t know, especially about what I don’t know.
